What is Chromium?

Chromium is the common name of the engine that many browsers are based on, including the popular Google Chrome. As an open-source project, it can be modified in any way and by anyone. Knowing this, hackers release their own versions of the browser, which are often used for advertising purposes. So, if you have never installed Сhromium, but it appeared on its own, then you are dealing with an unwanted version of the program. To confuse the user, Chromium has shortcuts and interface similar to Google Chrome. The browser itself cannot be considered as malware, though we would classify it as a potentially unwanted program. Chromium possesses such an unpleasant trait as generating advertisements on almost every page you open. Those pop-ups, banners, in-text links, etc. are shown due to gaining revenue from every person clicking them. Chromium also uses tracking cookies and collects valuable information about its users. All this shouldn’t be ignored, and it’s better to remove Chromium in order to prevent the harm it may cause to your privacy or system.

How Chromium gets on your Mac/PC?

Though it has an official website, the browser cannot be downloaded from there. Chromium can be seen promoted by ads placed on different download sources. Nevertheless, Chromium is seldom installed independently. Understanding that not many people are ready to replace their reputed browser with something new and not so popular, Chromium developers have to use a stealth method of bundling their program with others. This means, that the browser will be installed by default unless you deselect it manually.

According to our users, Chromium started to hack Mac/MacBook since September 2018. It has the same features as previous versions. Use our guide for removing Chromium from Mac.

  1. I have tried everything on the list, and it still appears on my app list. I have a laptop running windows 10. I even copied and pasted Data: deleted everything under that folder and when I go to my app list it still appears. What can I do? I don’t even remember downloading this.

  2. I had this problem and in all honesty i’m not exactly a computer wizard, but I managed to delete it without any major faffing around. To begin with i uninstalled chromium from the programs in control panel (as you would when uninstalling anything else) but even after that chromium would start-up whenever i started my pc back up. I tried everything that people had posted, but nothing. So, i finally got rid of it by starting my pc up again, going on task manager right click chromium on the processes, open file location and boom there it was. I deleted it and there was another file below it that said chromium blahblah.exe or something (which was also installed on the same date as chromium. I deleted that too. Turn my pc back off and on again, and it was gone. Simple as that.

  3. Simple way is to install first IObit Uninstaller and then right click the chromium then click Powerful unistall. Unistall and shred files, then restart.done

  4. Was it already removed if my anti-virus detected it and removed it and then i uninstalled it after the pop-up notif from my anti-virus?

  5. If you have Windows Ten and you press the windows button it will bring up a menu, then search task manager and open it up, then go to one of the folders, and you can disable chromium

  6. When I try to uninstall it a window pops up that says I have to make sure all Chrome windows are close even though I don’t have any window open

  7. I was able to get rid of chromium completely, but I still have an annoying search bar above all my windows that i CANNOT remove no matter what i try. if you know what this is about please tell me.

    • That’s the virus. It duplicates itself and hides the files, meaning it just reinstalls itself if you miss *any* of the hidden files. You probably missed a hidden file, so your computer would still be infected by it. The actual search bar is the virus hijacking chrome.

  8. Hey everybody, I have found the solution. So i download IFunbox for my pc and it also downloaded Chromium, i thought it was google chrome and proceeded to download it. So then a search engine popped up on the top of my screen, and Chromium was on my taskbar. I read posts on how to delete and i followed them, i went to control panel and uninstalled Chromium. The search engine remained but i deleted every Chromium there was. And then i went to Task Manager and deleted the Chromiums there. But still no luck with the search engine. I went back in Control Panel and then uninstall program. I looked at the dates for every application and deleted the ones that were todays. I deleted IFunBox but that didnt resolve the problem, i scrolled a little bit further and saw WebDiscoverBrowser and deleted. I exited out because i couldnt find any other Applications and to my luck the search engine was gone. The Solution :
    1. Go into Control Panel
    2. Find Uninstall Program
    3. Delete WebDiscoverBrowser and Chromium
